Monmouth College is a four-year coeducational private liberal arts college located in Monmouth, which is the county seat of Warren County, located in the US state of Illinois, with nearly 10 000 people, living within its limits, according to the 2000 census estimate.
Monmouth College was established in April, 1853, by the Second Presbytery of Illinois, a frontier arm of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, as Monmouth Academy, and it adopted its current name after receiving a charter from the state legislature on September 3, 1856. It was one of the the first institutions in the country to admit women from its inception, which lead to increased popularity and it being home of the women's sorority movement.
Monmouth's athletic teams are known as the Fighting Scots and they compete in NCAA Division III, in the Midwest Conference, in 10 varsity sports for men and 10 for women. Their distinctive colors are red and white.
